Research:
Ecology, freshwater ecology, salmonid ecology – three main areas:

1. Reproductive biology. Currently, a considerable number of papers and investigations are being summed up in a comparative work on the difference (or lack of difference) between iteroparous and semelparous reproduction among a wide array of Pacific and Atlantic salmonid. This research is performed in co-operation with Prof. Tom P. Quinn and associates, University of Washington, Seattle, Dr. Andrew Hendry, University of British Columbia, Vancouver and Ian Fleming, NINA, Trondheim.

2. Energetics, particularly winter energetics, in temperate environments. In 1998-99, I launched a large project: Winter energetics in salmon founded by NFR (1 mill Nkr) and the salmonid feed-producer BioMar A/S (3 mill Nkr). The project incorporates Prof. Per Carlsen, Dept. Organic chemistry, NTNU, Prof. Malcolm Jobling, NFH, UiTØ, and Dr. Arne M. Arnesen, Fiskeriforskning, Tromsø. We shall compare wild and net-pen hold salmon winter body composition and make an energy budged for Atlantic salmon in freshwater and sea under winter conditions.
3. Salmonid fry habitat choice and consequences of habitat destruction/hydro power regulations in running water are studied in cooperation with a research fellow and ass. prof. Jo Vegar Arnekleiv, the Museum, NTNU.
